‘iZombie’ Season 2 Episode 14 Recap: “The Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind”

Ravi and Liv now have the exact tainted utopium that they used to originally make the cure that was given to Blaine and Major in the finale of season one. Major is ready for Ravi to whip up another batch of the cure and shoot him up. Ravi insists on testing it first, which is a good thing, as apparently giving the cure to an already-cured zombie rat results in… a super aggressive zombie rat.

So, no cure, no idea about when one is going to be ready and Blaine, at least, is showing signs of reverting to zombie (the first clue is wine no longer tasting right).

Meanwhile, the relentlessly positive owner of a hipster coffee shop has been murdered. She stepped out of her coffee shop to look at some artwork that had been drawn on the sidewalk and someone dropped an air conditioner onto her head.

Her former boyfriend (who sued her and lost) is a compelling suspect, until he abilis out. That leaves the coffee shop owner’s daughter, Cher, and Cher’s Francophile boyfriend Gilbert (who insists his name be pronounced Gee-bear.)

Cher was the person who drew a picture of Mona Lisa on the sidewalk outside of her mother’s coffee shop, luring her outside, while her boyfriend was the one who pushed the A.C. unit out onto her head.

Before Clive and Liv can get a confession from Gilbert about Cher’s part in this, Cher kisses Gilbert in the middle of the police station and reinforces his willingness to take the fall for her.

Cher sells her mother’s business to her mother’s former boyfriend and gets in a taxi to the airport, heading to Paris alone.

On the subject of very clever bad guys, this episode Mr. Boss learns that Blaine is the one undercutting his business and using the D.A.’s office to put Mr. Boss’ people in prison.

After Blaine has sex with one of his employee’s, he’s singing “A Whiter Shade of Pale” when Mr. Boss and his men kidnap him. They drive him out into the woods, slit his throat, and bury him. But of course, Blaine is in the middle of transitioning back into a zombie. The next morning, while a girl scout trope is bird watching, Blaine claws his way out of the ground while Procul Harum sings “as her face at first just ghostly, turns a whiter shade of pale.”

Meanwhile, it’s revealed that Drake is an undercover cop. Drake and his contact, played by Enrico Colantoni (forever and always Keith Mars) stage an arrest. During Drake’s debrief at the police station, he learns that his relationship with Liv is known to his superiors – but he’s not willing to give it up,”not a chance.” She’s the one good thing he has in his life.

With the threat of turning back into a zombie and no cure in sight, Major comes to Liv. Major is clearly working himself up to tell Liv about all the secrets he’s been keeping from her. Gilda shows up. Dun-dun-dun-DUN. With Gilda there and Liv clearly urging him towards the door, he leaves, but not before revealing that Gilda is “Rita” the woman Major slept with and who later sent him sexy texts, knowing Liv was reading them.

Liv punches Glinda and tells her to be out of the apartment by midnight.

“The Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind” is a dark, comedic, and satisfying episode. It moves several plotlines forward and has some exciting reveals, and for the first time, the murderer escapes justice. It will be interesting to see if Cher returns to iZombie or if in this case, justice will remain un-served.
