Matt Damon is back and ready for a new type of action in The Martian trailer. No, he does not play an actual Martian — but an astronaut/botanist named Mark Watney who survives a fierce storm on Mars. The trailer follows his journey as he finds himself stranded and alone on the planet after his crew presumes him dead and leaves him behind. As he fends for his life, Watney must find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive while also drawing upon his ingenuity in order create more resources of food and water.
140 million miles stand between Watney and his safety in this science fiction film, but his spirit throughout the journey gives this film a feel-good edge. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian provides us a story filled with incredible bravery as Watney, NASA, his crew mates and ultimately the whole world come together to root for his heroic and safe return.
Based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, the film features a star-studded lineup that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, and Donald Glover. Not only does the trailer give us a glimpse into some pretty awesome special effects, but thanks to NASA’s director of planetary sciences Jim Green who worked as a consultant on the film, The Martian has been deemed to be a very realistic interpretation of a manned mission to Mars. Judging by the trailer, this film is sure to bring some out-of-this-world action to the big screen.
The Martian will hit theaters on October 2nd.
