Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne exceeded all expectations with his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. So it’s hard to think that there would be any other role for him to play that would be as challenging and groundbreaking – until now. Based on the novel by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl follows the 1920s love story between Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) and Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) as they struggle through their relationship when Einar begins to realize that he feels more like himself as Lili Elbe – the woman he posed as for his wife’s paintings.
The trailer gives us a glimpse of the beautiful and bright cinematography, intriguing music and Copenhagen background that supports this groundbreaking journey. Not only does the trailer hint at a beautifully made film, but it also shows us a side of Eddie Redmayne we’ve yet to see. The portrayal of a transgender woman fighting to become who she truly is, ultimately leading to one of the first gender-reassignment surgeries ever done, is a very emotionally challenging task; yet by the looks of the trailer, it seems that Redmayne is giving a genuine performance.
Directed by Tom Hooper, the film has already received a lot of praise and has culture blogs predicting that Eddie Redmayne will once again be an Academy Award nominee, if not winner. With the growing acceptance of the transgender community in entertainment alone this year, The Danish Girl is bound to pull at your heartstrings and give you a story you’ll want to hold on to.
The Danish Girl will dazzle its way into theaters on November 27.
