I was on IMDb recently and there was a movie poster that caught my eye entitled Room. I thought what film would be named Room? It’s random. Here’s the synopsis.
A modern day story about the boundless love between mother and child; young Jack knows nothing of the world except for the single room in which he was born and raised.
That intrigued me. What type of mother-son story takes place in only a room?
The story is adapted from the best-selling novel by Emma Donoghue. She was influenced by the Fritzl case, where 42-year-old Elizabeth Fritzl told police in the town of Amstetten, Austria that she had been held captive for twenty-four years in the basement of her house while her father, Josef Fritzl, physically assaulted, sexually abused, and raped her numerous times during imprisonment. The abuse from her father resulted in the birth of seven children and one miscarriage.
Similar to the Fritzl case, the mother and son, Jack, are both captives of a man who is referred to as Old Nick. The mother was kidnapped as a teenager by Old Nick, and the subsequent abuse resulted in Jack. He only knows life inside the room, which is a heavily reinforced shed, and believes life outside the room is “not real.” He and his mother scream as loud as they can once a day because it is their only cry for help.
I’ve watched the trailer a couple of times already, and I’m still not tired of it. Throughout the trailer, the mother sings a lullaby, and it sounds like innocence tinged with eeriness. As I continue to watch the trailer, the mother’s singing stops. Ominous screeching violins and alarms come in while the mother narrates escape directions for Jack.
It’s a scenario that unfortunately does happen in the world. It wasn’t only the Fritzl case, but Jaycee Dugard, the Ariel Castro kidnapping case, and Katie Beers. I’m glad this movie is being shown because it gives an idea of what victims may have been experiencing and feeling at the time.
Room will have a limited release on October 16th and a nationwide release on November 6th.
