The trailer for About Ray shows a glimpse of the challenges faced by three generations of women living under the same roof. The story follows Ray (portrayed by Elle Fanning) and his journey as a transgender teen who decides to undergo the transition from female to male, all while his mother Maggie (Naomi Watts) and Grandmother (Susan Sarandon) support him through the ups and downs that come along with it.
The trailer cuts to-and-from the different stages of Ray’s transition: his working out to gain weight, his hormonal changes, as well as the emotional struggles faced by him and his divorced parents as they fight through their conflicting opinions on Ray’s surgical changes. It portrays the inner and outer emotional challenges that transgender teens face while endearingly telling the story of how Ray transitions into his true self.
The heart-warming music along with the scenes of a multi-generational family as they come together and triumph through conflicts, make the film that much more appealing. Although the film includes Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, it seems that Elle Fanning has completely stolen the show through her character portrayal of Ray. Directed by Gaby Dellal, this film will definitely be a must-watch for 2015.
Originally named Three Generations, About Ray will be released by The Weinstein Company and is scheduled to hit US theaters on September 18, 2015.
