Humans, a new sci-fi drama with a thriller element, is premiering June 28 on AMC and June 14 on Channel 4. It explores the relatively familiar sci-fi trope of artificial intelligence via robotic servants called Synths. Humans was created by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley and based on a 2012 Swedish series called Real Humans.
Humans is set in a parallel present, where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a Synth –- a highly-developed robotic servant, eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way his family lives, father Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill) purchases a Synth (Gemma Chan) against the wishes of his wife (Katharine Parkinson), only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences. Through four concurrent story lines, Humans explores the emotional impact that comes as the lines between people and machines become increasingly blurred.
In the video below, actress Gemma Chan talks about the series, “I think [Humans] reflects loads of things about our relationship with technology with our dependence on it and our ambivalence towards it.”
Humans stars Gemma Chan, Colin Morgan, William Hurt, Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, Lucy Carless, Rebecca Front, Will Tudor, Ivanno Jeremiah, Emily Berrington, and Ruth Bradley.
Chan, who appears in most of the promo for the series, plays a Synth named Anita. Watch her character trailer below.
Anita is a beautiful Synthetic, purchased by the Hawkins family to help around the house. Most of the time, Anita is the pliant, servile automaton that all Synths are supposed to be – but every so often she does something inexplicable. Is there something more to Anita than the android she appears to be?
