Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast to play supervillain Baron Mordo in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange, also starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton. Cumberbatch is Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange himself, while Swinton is playing a gender-swapped and race-swapped version of The Ancient One, a Tibetan sorcerer who mentors Strange.
Marvel’s villains have been notoriously underwhelming, but here’s hoping that Doctor Strange can break the mold. In the comic books, Baron Mordo is a former student of The Ancient One until he takes a turn for the dark side and plots to kill his mentor. He was the main antagonist in the 2007 animated movie, Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme, and he’s appeared in the Cartoon Network animated series, The Super Hero Squad Show.
Mordo has powers of astral projection, hypnosis, and more. He’s also a willing practitioner of black magic, because, of course.
Doctor Strange is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016.
