Need A Ghostbuster? Call Melissa McCarthy!
Every fangirl I’ve mentioned it to has been salivating for a female-team Ghostbusters movie since the idea bounced around social media last summer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first cast member has been chosen! Melissa McCarthy, who charmed me quite against my will in The Heat, will be one of the new Ghostbusters in the comedy reboot directed by Paul Feig.
With no description or caption, just the image, Paul Feig tweeted his cast choices today. If all goes as expected, McCarthy may soon be joined by Saturday Night Live alumni Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Rather than a sequel, this will be an entirely new adventure as the team discovers ghosts in a world that’s never dealt with so much as a drop of pink ectoplasm.
With the blessing of former cast members like Bill Murray, box office-proven comedians in the jumpsuits, and more than thirty years of pop culture nostalgia to draw on, the new Ghostbusters has all the opportunities to knock it out of the park. Although I was hoping for America Ferrera or Mindy Kaling to sign up, these four given actresses are funny, smart, and sure to nail it.
As for a soundtrack, let me kickstart the first rumor right, here, right now: I can’t wait for the Nicki Minaj cover of “Who You Gonna Call?”
