Who you gonna call? Melissa McCarthy, apparently.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the actress is wanted for a leading role in the new Ghostbusters film, with the only thing slowing down negotiations being her busy schedule. McCarthy is committed to filming CBS’ Mike and Molly as well as Michelle Darnell, a film written and directed by her husband, Ben Falcone. Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live) and Jillian Bell (Workaholics) are also reportedly being considered for roles.
The interest in McCarthy isn’t surprising considering her connection with the director, Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and his co-writer, Katie Dippold, who wrote the 2013 McCarthy-Bullock buddy comedy vehicle The Heat.
Bill Murray himself also mentioned McCarthy as a possible star for the franchise (the two starred in St. Vincent together), as well as lending his support to the project. From far away. Very far away. Far enough away where he can’t be involved with the project.
At this stage, it’s hard to find a comedic actress who isn’t supposedly being considered for the film, but if we got our way it would be great to see Mindy Kaling cleaning up slime, or maybe even one of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine women getting involved in the ghost hunting.
Happy New Year to everybody, even the Ghostbusters reboot haters. I love you all. I promise I will try not to ruin your childhoods. #iswear
