The cast of David Ayers’ Suicide Squad has been revealed. Variety confirmed the news.
Will Smith – Deadshot
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Tom Hardy – Rick Flag
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
Jared Leto – The Joker
The actresses under consideration for the role of Amanda Waller are Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Oprah Winfrey.
A few people have already come forward calling this “PC bullshit” because of propaganda by “social justice warriors” or whatever conspiracy theories racists like to come up with these days. (FYI, everyone else in this movie is white, besides Amanda Waller.) They’re probably the same people who take issue with John Boyega being in the upcoming Star Wars movie. But I digress.
It’s Will Smith, people, one of the most recognizable names in the world. Say what you want about After Earth, but Will Smith remains one of the coolest dudes in Hollywood and it’s about damn time that he got on the
superhero supervillain movie bandwagon. (Let’s pretend Hancock never happened.) And he’s a really good actor.
This is probably my favorite casting decision. It was confirmed weeks ago that Robbie had been picked for the role and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Harley Quinn is such an iconic DC villain and she has yet to be portrayed on the big-screen despite the gazillion Batman movies we’ve had over the years. After seeing Robbie in The Wolf of Wall Street, she definitely has the acting chops to pull this off. Most of all, I’m really excited to see Harley Quinn in a huge blockbuster.
There should be a rule about prohibiting actors from portraying more than one comic book character (unless your name is “Chris Evans”). We already saw Hardy in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises just a few years ago as Bane. I have nothing against Tom Hardy, but this casting is just uninspired.
Who? What? Why? This guy is already in the Terminator reboot, the Divergent franchise, and he played Bruce Willis’ son in the most recent Die Hard movie, which was awful. Despite being wholly unremarkable, he seems to be all over the map.
All I know about Cara Delevingne is that she’s a model, and models have had a notoriously difficult history of trying to go into acting. She could be good. Who knows? I’m surprised Enchantress is going to be in the movie. I also find it unsettling that the two women on the squad were both born in the ’90s.
Leto certainly has big shoes to fill. Obviously, he’s no Heath Ledger — and Ledger got his fair share of criticism when it was first announced that he would be playing The Joker in The Dark Knight. But I say, give him a chance. I could see Leto being very dedicated to the role and wanting to do his best. And I doubt Suicide Squad‘s version of The Joker will be anything like Christopher Nolan’s, which attempted to be somewhat grounded in reality.
Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer
Seeing Oprah’s name in the shortlist of actresses to play Amanda Waller was pretty unexpected. I laughed. What a completely random choice, but I suppose it would bring more name recognition to the movie. She’s apparently Warner Bros.’s top choice. Of these three actresses, I’d most want to see Viola Davis in the role. She can be pretty scary and ruthless in How To Get Away With Murder, and Amanda Waller is a more amplified version of that. She straps bombs on people’s chest, for crying out loud. If push came to shove, I could see Annalise Keating doing the same.
Suicide Squad starts filming in April 2015 in Toronto. It opens August 5, 2016.
