I haven’t actually seen the original Hot Tub Time Machine, but I know the premise: hot tub becomes time machine, people get in hot tub, people are transported back in time into their younger selves and start to fuck shit up.
And now, in the sequel that probably no one asked for, the hot tub’s back to do it all again. Craig Robinson, Clarke Duke, and Rob Corddry reprise their roles as Nick, Jacob, and Lou, whose lives post-first film ended up being pretty great. They decide to go for a whirl in the hot tub for old time’s sake, but instead of going backwards in time, they end up in the future. Turns out, as great as their lives may be in the present, it’ll all go downhill in ten years’ time, so it’s back to the time machine they go to try and fix it all. Although he only shows up a few times in the trailer, posters for the sequel imply the addition of Adam Scott to the team as Adam Yates Jr., the grown-up son of John Cusack’s character from the original.
To be honest, the trailer itself is looking a little weak to me. However, I thought Craig Robinson was hilarious in This Is The End, what I remember of Clarke Duke in Greek was funny, and (of course) Parks and Recreation‘s Adam Scott is great, so I might give this film a whirl myself. And I’m not gonna lie, I snickered at the little end song. “Neeerd. You’re a nerd (and no one likes you)” are some ultra high quality lyrics.
I’d probably need to watch 2010’s Hot Tub Time Machine first though.
When Lou, who has become the “father of the Internet,” is shot by an unknown assailant, Jacob and Nick fire up the time machine again to save their friend.
Hot Tub Time Machine 2 opens February 20, 2015.
