Legendary Pictures released the first image from Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Gothic romance horror film Crimson Peak.
Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam. It was written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins (Mimic). The image shows Jessica Chastain wearing all-black and standing by a staircase under a very Gothic atmosphere.
In an interview with Collider, del Toro described the aesthetic of the film: “I tried to make it painterly. I tried to make it so that the set design, wardrobe design and cinematography felt of a piece. But at the same time, very modern looking… But at the same time we’re using a very classical Gothic romance structure that I think visually is very bold and very refined and carefully designed, but it’s all part of the storytelling of a very classical genre.”
Described as a “dark fairy tale,” here is the plot synopsis for Crimson Peak:
In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.
Crimson Peak opens in theaters on October 16, 2015.
