Nightcrawler is “fucking amazeballs” according to this new red band trailer.
Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.
We Got This Covered gave it a positive review, with reviewer Sam Woolf saying, “With a mesmerizing performance from [Jake] Gyllenhaal and [Dan] Gilroy’s solid handling of the material, Nightcrawler makes for a deviously enjoyable middle-ground between arthouse and schlockhouse.” HitFix‘s Drew McWeeny wrote that Jake Gyllenhaal gives his best performance to date: “He seems to build his characters from the outside in, transforming himself almost completely in the details of how he moves, how he carries his weight, how he looks.”
Meanwhile, Variety‘s Scott Foundas called Gyllenhaal’s acting “amusing to watch but not believable for so much as a second.”
Directed by Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Enemy), Riz Ahmed (Closed Circuit), Rene Russo (Thor), Bill Paxton (Edge of Tomorrow), and Ann Cusack (The Informant).
Nightcrawler will be released in theaters on October 31, 2014.
