Showtime has officially renewed Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan’s Gothic horror-drama for a second season.
Showtime’s Penny Dreadful has certainly been living up to my expectations, so I couldn’t be happier about the news that a second season is underway. Eva Green has been killing it as the enigmatic and tarot card-reading Vanessa Ives. Check out the séance scene in episode 2. It was pure insanity in the best possible way.
The show has also delivered on its title by bringing together Gothic literary characters such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Mina Harker, and – in the most recent episode – Professor Van Helsing. If you ask me, Penny Dreadful is the perfect show to fill the void left behind by True Blood when it has its series finale this summer. Set in Victorian era London, Penny Dreadful is a better written and more elegant version of True Blood. It’s filmed beautifully and the production design has been incredible this season. I’m definitely looking forward to future episodes.
Note: Penny Dreadful has been averaging 4.8 million viewers across all Showtime platforms; it ranks as Showtime’s most-watched show On Demand. Season 2 will get 10 episodes and creator John Logan, who wrote all of season 1, has already begun writing the episodes.
