Yes, it’s true. B.J. Novak, otherwise known as The Office‘s Ryan the Temp, has written a book. In the process of writing said book, he has apparently turned into a super pretentious black and white French-speaking caricature, and oh man, is it hilarious. Best buddy Mindy Kaling also makes an appearance as Novak’s dream girl, an elegant woman who only hangs out in Parisian cafés memorizing everything Sartre has ever said, and who authored Is It Existentially Possible That The World Hangs Out In My Absence (a line made even funnier because Kaling actually did write a book that was sort-of named that). There’s even a surprise twist at the end of the trailer:
Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, “One More Thing” has at its heart the most human of phenomena: love, fear, hope, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element just that might make a person complete. Across a dazzling range of subjects, themes, tones, and narrative voices, the many pieces in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humor, deep heart, sharp eye, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the reader.
In the words of French Novak himself, One More Thing: Stories and More Stories has, well, many types of stories in it. “They’re all comedic on some level,” he croons while waving an unlit cigarette around, “Some of them have more emotion, some of them more philosophy.” Vague as all that may sound, if the stories are as amusing as this trailer was, then it’ll be right up my alley.
One More Thing will be available through publisher Knopf on February 4, 2014.
