Marvel’s Phase 3 is well underway, with multiple news sources confirming that Paul Rudd will be cast as Hank Pym in Ant-Man. The upcoming superhero movie, which is scheduled for a July 2015 release date, shortly after the release of The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, will be directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World’s End). Wright wrote the script alongside Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).
Ant-Man, while a founding member of The Avengers in the comic books, isn’t a well-known or particularly popular superhero. A scientist who discovers subatomic particles that he subsequently dubs “Pym particles,” Hank Pym ends up with size-altering abilities, along with the power to communicate with insects. The premise certainly lends itself to plenty of comedic moments. And since I can’t imagine how Ant-Man will translate to a live-action film, the movie will probably be more comedic in nature compared to other Marvel films, especially with Edgar Wright as screenwriter and director.
Except for a few rumors here and there, there’s been no real mention of Janet van Dyne a.k.a. The Wasp, Ant-Man’s primary love interest. She’s a socialite turned superheroine who gains size-altering abilities after being exposed to “Pym particles,” along with wings that allow her to fly when she shrinks, all courtesy of Hank Pym. Later on, she gains the ability to throw energy blasts. The rumor back in October was that Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) was the most serious contender for the role of Janet van Dyne. Since the rumors of Paul Rudd as Ant-Man have panned out, I wonder what that means for Rashida Jones. Rudd and Jones have played love interests before, back in the 2009 comedy I Love You, Man.
Ant-Man is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2015.
