Although rumors have been circulating for a while now, Marvel finally confirmed today that Elizabeth Olsen (Oldboy, Martha Marcy May Marlene) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass 2, Savages) will appear in the sequel to 2012’s The Avengers.
Olsen will play Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (the role was previously offered to Saoirse Ronan, who turned it down) and Taylor-Johnson will appear as the silver-haired Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver. Scarlet Witch is a telekinetic who also has the ability to manipulate probability by casting “hexes”, while her brother Quicksilver has superhuman speed.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will bring the Marvel Universe’s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains, with “Marvel’s The Avengers” director Joss Whedon returning to write and direct the sequel. “Marvel’s The Avengers” was released in 2012 and went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-largest grossing movie of all time. Despite Magneto being their father, Age of Ultron won’t be able to use Magneto’s name or even the word “mutant”, since those rights belong to Sony.
In an interview, Taylor-Johnson said that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were abandoned by their parents in Eastern Europe, where they grew up having to defend and look out for each other.
His sister really is his guidance – emotionally she’s the one who looks after him, and vice versa. He’s very overprotective physically – he doesn’t want anyone touching her. [Total Film]
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is slated for a 2015 release date.
