A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock the States, “American Hustle” tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).
DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down.
Like David O. Russell’s previous films, “American Hustle” defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.
Watch the trailer for David O. Russell’s new film, American Hustle. O’Russell has previously worked with Christian Bale and Amy Adams in The Fighter and Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in last year’s Silver Linings Playbook, for which Lawrence won the Academy Award for Best Actress. This marks the first time O’Russell has worked with Jeremy Renner (The Avengers, The Hurt Locker).
In the trailer above, Cooper shows off a hilariously fantastic perm. Lawrence, the youngest in the cast and much too baby-faced, looks the most out-of-place, especially as a mother in her late 30’s who’s married to Bale’s character.
No doubt O’Russell, who co-wrote the screenplay, is hoping American Hustle will be a major Oscar contender next year.
American Hustle will be released in theaters on December 13, 2013.
