A 18th century adventure story centered on young Thomas, who is apprenticed to the local Spook to learn to fight evil spirits. His first great challenge comes when the powerful Mother Malkin escapes her confinement while the Spook is away.
How…how did I not know this adaptation was happening?
Seventh Son is based on The Wardstone Chronicles series (The Last Apprentice in the US) by Joseph Delaney, but much seems to have been lost in the translation from page to screen. The books offered up a fairly historically accurate version of the UK (with the added addition of boggarts, witches, and ghosts being real).
I wasn’t a huge fan of these books back when I read them (which must have been middle school – it wasn’t last week) but I enjoyed them casually. Never one for the typical medieval fantasy, I liked their blend of real life and the fantastical.
The movie seems to have dropped all this for a typical sword and sorcery plot – and seems to be coming up a little too Season of the Witch for my taste.
Learning that this adaption was happening piqued my interest, but this trailer killed any desire I had to actually see the movie.
Seventh Son stars Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges, and Julianne Moore (How did they get these people?) and the release date is TBA (probably 2014).
Will you be seeing Seventh Son if it ever sees the light of day?
