Rashida Jones and Rob Lowe Leaving “Parks and Recreation”

In today’s edition of “Why God, Why?!?!” we will be covering the latest breaking news from the Parks and Recreation family. Executive producer Mike Schur has confirmed the sad bit of cast news: the imminent departure of Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones) and Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe).

Take a look at Schur’s official statement:

The news about Rob and Rashida is true — they will be leaving the show after the 13th episode of the upcoming season six. We’ve been working on their storyline (on and off) for four seasons now, and heading into this year, with the two of them contemplating parenthood, it felt like a natural time to move them into the next phase.

We absolutely love both Rashida and Rob, and will be sad to see them go. Rashida was one of the very first people we knew we wanted in the cast, and as important as Ann is to Leslie (and vice-versa), she’ll certainly never be far from Pawnee. Rob we initially thought we could only have for six or eight episodes, and we couldn’t be happier that he will have stuck around for 75.

They are wonderful, funny, committed actors, they’ve been a huge part of the Parks and Rec family, and we think we have a great Pawnee send-off in the works for them. – Mike Schur

It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to these two, particularly Jones’ Ann Perkins. She is part of what made the show work in its dark season one, Office clone days – before it became a successful, warm, critically accalaimed comedy.

While Jones has been on the show since Day One, Lowe came in towards the end of season 2 as city government fixer. Despite his late arrival, he gelled excellently with the rest of the cast and it is odd to think of the show without his brand of “my body is the most efficient temple” charm.

I’m sad to see any member of this perfectly balanced cast go – however, if I had to choose two characters to get the boot, these guys would be it. While Ann serves a more grounded role than the rest of the characters, and Chris is hilarious, neither one compares to the likes of Leslie, Ben, Donna, or Tom in the laugh-out-loud department.

Even so, it’s still a dark day in the Parks and Rec fandom, so I think I’ll leave you all with a short, fun Ann/Chris video to soothe your pain.

How do you guys feel about this sudden change?
