Recently, Andrew Garfield – who just wrapped up filming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – said that he’s had “philosophical discussions” with one of the producers of the movie regarding Spidey’s sexuality. He mused on the idea that Spider-Man could be bisexual and that Mary Jane could, in turn, be a guy.
And there’s even a specific actor Andrew Garfield has in mind to play the part – Michael B. Jordan!
I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality! [Entertainment Weekly]
Umm, yes please! Picture Michael B. Jordan leaning against a door frame and saying, “Face it, tiger. You just hit the jackpot!” They even have nearly matching initials – an MJ for an MJ.
It seems Garfield has brought up the idea more than once to director Marc Webb who said, “Michael B. Jordan, I know.”
And I can’t not mention the rumors that Michael B. Jordan might be playing The Human Torch – an ally and close friend of Spider-Man in the comic book universe – in the Fantastic Four reboot which is being directed by Josh Trank. Trank and Jordan worked together on last year’s Chronicle (great movie!) and are reportedly good friends.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, Jordan said:
With superheroes, a lot of those comics were created before the 1960s, so they weren’t going to have a black man save America,” says Jordan. “So I think it’s more of a continuity thing now. With more generic superheroes, why can’t you have a black, Asian, Hispanic actor play the role? Hopefully, in my lifetime, we’ll see more black superheroes.
Personally, I would be thrilled with either of these outcomes.
Michael B. Jordan is a phenomenal actor (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, The Wire) and it’s pretty awesome how he’s already made a fangirl out of Andrew Garfield. Plus, with all the rave reviews Fruitvale Station has been getting ever since it premiered at Sundance, this is gonna be one hell of a year for MBJ. I’m predicting lots of Oscar buzz!
Meanwhile, Michael B. Jordan was on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show to promote Fruitvale Station. Apparently, he broke his hand trying to break his girlfriend’s fall!
