Weekly Pop Culture Picks #1

May 26 – June 1, 2013

Each week we’ll be doing a round-up of our favorite or most memorable pop culture happenings – what we call our “Weekly Pop Culture Picks.”

Dan Harmon Returning to Community

Max: Dan Harmon was infamously ripped away from his sweet, sweet creation last spring – right after news that the on-the-bubble show had been saved from the Grim Reaper that is NBC.

Most people have found the new version lacking, while others think it’s about average/exactly the same (I have yet to come across any comments saying it’s better). But, regardless of how one feels about the show in its current form, it’s pretty horrible for a creator to have the reigns taken away from him. It would have been one thing if he quit the show of his own accord and picked a successor, but that simply wasn’t the case.

It’s nice to see that NBC has been able to get him back, because it is really only fair that the person who created a series with such a devoted fandom should be involved in the creative process on a weekly basis.

I wonder if next season will begin with the gang sitting around the table discussing the coma and eventual death of Pierce, musing on what he dreamt in his final days. The joke would be that his coma dream was the entirety of season four, of course.

Hannibal getting renewed for season 2

Christine: I’ve been falling behind on Hannibal the past few weeks in a sad attempt at distancing myself before the inevitable cancellation, but the joke’s on me because it was renewed! Woo!

News came out a few days ago about this happy event, and I couldn’t be more pleased. Hannibal is an extremely interesting show, with top-notch acting, stunning visuals, and engaging storylines. Plus, there are some rumors going around about the show creator, Bryan Fuller, wanting to cast musician David Bowie as Hannibal’s uncle. You have no idea how much I need that scene in my eyeballs. I’m definitely glad it’s getting a 13-episode second season!

Zosia and Clara Mamet’s Failed Kickstarter Project

Hera: My favorite thing this week is Zosia and Clara Mamet’s (daughters of David Mamet – both of whom are regulars on TV shows) Kickstarter failing to make its goal.

I know it’s mean to kick someone while they’re already down, but it’s nice to see that not all celebrity vanity projects (see: Zach Braff) are getting funded by people with less money than said celebrities/rich people.

As of Wednesday, only 9 people had donated a total of $456 to the Kickstarter that is attempting to raise $32,000 for a “French baroque-inspired hipster folk” music video. Among the prizes you would receive? Donate $2,000 and you get to have a 45-minute Skype session with the two sisters! Wow-whee. If you give $8,000 or more then you will receive Zosia Mamet’s director-style chair from the set of Girls with “Shoshanna” (the character she plays on the show) embroidered on the back… something you can get for less than $40 at Ikea.

Suffice to say, no one has taken her up on the offer yet. As I’m writing this, they still have 7 days left to go with $2,370 raised before the Kickstarter campaign comes to an end.
