5 Television Shows If They Were Gender-Swapped

5 Television Shows If They Were Gender-Swapped

We play around with a lot of ideas for articles, and this is something that we had a lot of fun putting together. Gender-swapping these shows would create a different, possibly more interesting dynamic among the various characters. For some of these, the plot would change drastically – for others, not so much. Read on to find out what five shows we gender-swapped and why we think it would be amazing if it were implemented for real television.

The Good Husband

genderswap 2

Greg Kinnear as The Good Husband and Julianna Margulies as The Good Wife

After his politician wife is jailed for corruption and for a very public sex scandal involving a prostitute, “the good husband” goes back to work as a lawyer – having been a stay-at-home dad for over 12 years. He is hired by the firm Lockhart & Gardner, partly because Gardner is an old friend from Georgetown University.

We’ve all heard the story of the philandering politician time and time again. But how would it be different if the philandering politician was a woman? Imagine it was Hillary Clinton as the President of the United States in the Oval Office cheating on Bill Clinton. On The Good Wife, Alicia’s husband has recovered from the scandal and is now running for Governor of Illinois. If it were a woman who had done what he had done, would she be given a second chance by the public – enough to return to her political career?

Elementary

John Cho as Watson and Eva Green as Holmes

Watson is hired as a sober companion for Holmes, a recovering heroin addict and consultant for the NYPD. Her methods may be unusual, but Holmes has the power of deduction on her side when it comes to solving crimes. Eventually, Watson becomes a permanent fixture after Holmes takes him on as an apprentice.

The series already gender-bent (and race-bent) John Watson in favor of Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu. But what if they had decided to gender-bend Sherlock, instead? How would the show be different? The same? Would it have incited even more anger from the fans of BBC’s Sherlock who were already incensed by the existence of this show and the gender-bending, as stated above?

Supernatural

Kali Hawk and Kat Graham as Dean and Sam Winchester

Kali Hawk and Kat Graham as Dean and Sam Winchester

Two sisters go on the road to hunt down monsters, demons, and various supernatural creatures. There’s an angel in there somewhere, and… someone goes to hell and back? We don’t actually watch this show. The only thing we’re really clear on is that there are two brothers and some fans want them to straight-up bang each other. Until we started doing the minimal amount of research required for this article, we always thought “Wincest” was an air conditioning repair company.

It would be pretty interesting to see two sisters in this type of show and see their sisterly dynamic develop. Would the show have lasted 8+ years, though?

New Girl Boy

genderswap 3

First row: Justin Long as Jess and Zooey Deschanel. Second row: Rutina Wesley as Wilhelmina and Lizzy Caplan as Nicky. Third row: Alison Brie as Schmidt and Sendhil Ramamurthy as Cecil.

An eccentric, quirky young man moves in with three single women he finds through Craigslist, following a bad break-up with an ex-girlfriend. There’s Nicky, the grumpy bartender struggling to finish her zombie novel, Schmidt, the high-maintenance, high-energy one of the group, and Wilhelmina, who recently returned from Latvia where she played for the all-women basketball team. Along with Jess’ male model best friend Cecil, the five of them go through all kinds of mishaps and hijinks.

TV has a tendency to refer to women as “girls” and men as, well… “men”. See: Gossip Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Girls. I could go on.  If “New Boy” were to get picked up, the moniker would definitely change to something like “New Guy”. Men don’t like to think of themselves as “boys”. Here the man is being portrayed as the adorable, bubbly one for a change.

Scandal

genderswap 1

Julianne Moore as POTUS and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Oliver Pope

Oliver Pope (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a professional “fixer” who heads his own crisis management firm, keeping murders, conspiracies, and mistresses from being revealed to the public. Unbeknownst to everyone, he had been having an affair with the President of the United States prior to leaving his White House job. Their chemistry and attraction to one another is undeniable, but they have to keep each other at arm’s length. It’s only when they’re alone with each other that they can unleash the passionate beasts burning hotly inside them.

No, but seriously, it would be an interesting gender-swapped show to watch. You have the first female President of the United States, who only won because of election rigging. You also have her diabolical First Husband, a Chief of Staff who sent a hitman after her wife, and a team of so-called “gladiators” including a murder-addicted ex-CIA operative.

I would probably have watched Scandal a lot sooner in that format. Hell, if they decide to go with that format in future seasons; I’ll be all over it.

I was liking how they looked like the characters, but the Supernatural Gen-swap was disappointing in that they didn’t look anything like Sam and Dean, and annoying in that you didn’t even seem to try since they couldn’t look anymore different.
